In most of central London the hardest part of moving day is not the lifting. It is finding somewhere legal for the van to stand. A little planning a few weeks ahead makes the whole day smoother.
A removal van that has to park around the corner adds carrying time to every single item. In streets with resident-only bays, single yellow lines or red routes, there may be nowhere legal to stop at all unless space has been arranged.
Central London councils let you apply to suspend one or more parking bays outside your address for moving day. The bays are signed in advance so they are empty when the van arrives.
Some streets allow loading only at certain times, and pedestrianised areas may allow vehicles only early in the morning. Red routes have their own loading rules shown on the signs.
Many apartment blocks and offices have an off-street loading bay. These are usually booked through the concierge or building management, sometimes with a maximum vehicle height. Ask for the booking in writing and pass on any limits.
Not always, but in most residential streets it is the only way to guarantee the van can stop outside. If your building has its own loading bay, booking that may be enough.
Usually the resident applies to their council. Tell us what you have arranged so the crew knows exactly where to park.
