Moving house checklist: eight weeks to moving day

Moving goes most smoothly when the jobs are spread out. Here is a simple timeline you can follow from eight weeks out.

Eight weeks to go

• Book a survey and get a fixed quote.
• Start clearing out: decide what to sell, donate or have cleared.
• Check your building's rules for moving at both addresses.

Four to six weeks to go

• Confirm the moving date and book any parking suspension or loading bay.
• Book goods lifts if either building has one.
• Decide whether you want the crew to pack for you.

Two weeks to go

• Tell utilities, your council and your bank about the move.
• Arrange redirection of post.
• Start packing rooms you use least.

The week of the move

• Defrost the freezer the day before.
• Pack a day bag with documents, chargers, medication and keys.
• Confirm timings with the crew and the building.

Moving day

Keep the day bag with you, do a final walk-round of every room and cupboard, and take meter readings at both ends. If your completion date slips, tell us as soon as you know and the day can be replanned.
